International Space Station (ISS) crew have the opportunity to visit Earth at their leisure using virtual reality (VR). VR helmet combined with exercise bike allows space explorers to cycle around their home planet digitally, according to reports portal Space.com.

VR equipment on the ISS helps crew maintain both their physical and mental health while working in space.

At the end of October 2023, a more powerful exercise bike was installed on the International Space Station, and a new VR helmet with special sensors for working in zero gravity conditions was delivered there.

The virtual immersion device was initially planned to be used to study the mental health of astronauts but was later adapted for physical exercise.

Cycling training with a VR helmet has become one of the favorite activities among orbital station residents, according to European Space Agency astronaut Andreas Mongensen, commander of the 70th ISS Expedition.

“It really makes a difference. When you see yourself cycling up a virtual mountain, you’ll be more motivated to pedal a little harder. We live on a space station, and it’s a very artificial environment. We can’t communicate with nature. Virtual reality brings inaccessible sensations,” Mongensen told reporters. It gives the feeling of maximum approach.
