The peer-reviewed scientific journal Frontiers in Cell Development and Biology removed an article featuring a neural network-generated image of a rat with a large penis and apologized for the publication. In this respect reports Vice edition.
The paper was written by three scientists from China, edited by a researcher from India, and reviewed by two scientists from the United States and India. It was published Feb. 12 in the journal Frontiers in Cell Development and Biology. Despite numerous checks, the document contained AI-generated illustrations that went viral on social media for their absurdity.
One of the drawings showed a mouse with gigantic genitals, along with distorted text such as “iollotte sserotgomar cell” and “testtomcels.” The authors said they used the generative AI tool Midjourney to create the images.
Already on the 16th, the magazine published an announcement stating that the article had been corrected and the new version would be published soon. The journal later updated its notice, stating that it rejected the study entirely because “the article does not meet Frontiers’ standards of editorial and scientific rigor.” Frontiers apologized to the scientific community in response to the journalists’ request.
