Cyber crooks ask Russians to install malware under the name of a banking app update file to gain access to the victim’s accounts. In this respect reports Lenta.ru publication cites the words of Alexander Vurasko, head of the Solar AURA external digital threat monitoring service of the Solar group of companies.

As part of the scheme, scammers call Russians and offer to install a mobile banking update on their smartphones on behalf of employees of a particular bank. If the potential victim agrees, he or she will be given detailed instructions on how to do this. As a rule, under the guise of such an “update” there is an application for remote control of a smartphone. With its help, attackers steal SMS authorization and transaction confirmation codes, as well as passwords of personal accounts in online banks.

According to Vurasko, in this scenario, the attackers do not make long-term preparations for the victim. Instead, people immediately fear the need to install the update under the threat of having their accounts blocked.

The expert suggests that the most reliable way to protect against such attacks is to immediately stop talking to people who pose as bank employees. As a last resort, you should not carry out any manipulations at the request of such people. Another reliable line of defense is mobile antiviruses, as they are able to warn the user about the installation of most modern malicious utilities.
