YouTube blogger Zach Nelson, who goes by the pseudonym JerryRigEverything, tested the strength of the Apple Vision Pro and found that the mixed reality headset’s protective glass was easily scratched. A clear manifestation of the problem is Nelson showed in his new video.
In testing, JerryRigEverything uses tools to determine the hardness of materials based on the Mohs scale. Scratches on the front panel of the Vision Pro begin to appear even when using a tool with a tip of the second hardness level. The scratches became more noticeable and deeper when using a level four tool. For comparison: on modern flagship smartphones scratches are 5-6. level begins to appear.
Based on the results, the blogger suggested that the front panel of the headset, or at least its top layer, was made of plastic. Although Apple’s website states the material is “laminated glass.” Nelson recommended that owners of expensive devices use only microfiber cloths to wipe the front panel.
