Users of Russian VPN services may experience trouble due to “trouble spots and dangerous moments.” In this respect reports The Izvestia publication cites the words of Vladimir Zykov, director of the Association of Professional Users of Social Networks and Messengers.
According to Zykov, there are many ways VPN services can harm a person. Firstly, such an app can physically start using various smartphone data such as SMS, photos, geolocation data and more. Secondly, the expert noted that if data exchange in a VPN service does not occur via the HTTPS protocol, developers can change the content.
“Additionally, if a user logs into a banking app with VPN enabled, the bank may detect this as a hacking attempt and temporarily block access to the app to protect the user,” Zykov added.
Before that, on February 5, 2024, Roskomnadzor reminded that the ban on the proliferation of VPN services will come into force on March 1.
