Chinese IT company Tencent Holdings is working to adapt the popular console game Elden Ring to smartphones. In this respect reports Reuters quotes sources. Tencent is the world’s largest gaming company by revenue.
According to Reuters sources, Tencent purchased the rights to the mobile port of the game from FromSoftaware (developer of Elden Ring) in 2022. At the same time, the Chinese IT giant acquired 16% of the Japanese studio.
Tencent is on the hunt for new mobile hits and has high hopes for Elden Ring. A team of several dozen people is working on the game. Details about the upcoming project have not been revealed – sources have only said that Tencent wants to see it as a rival to miHoYo’s popular gacha game Genshin Impact through internal acquisitions.
Reuters reminded that Elden Ring is not Tencent’s first attempt to adapt a console game to mobile platforms. Before this, the Chinese company was working on a version of NieR: Automata for smartphones, but canceled the project because it could not find a successful monetization model.
Elden Ring is an action role-playing game in a dark fantasy setting from the developers of the Dark Souls and Demon’s Souls series. The game was released in 2022 and over 20 million copies were sold in 12 months. That same year, Elden Ring won the Best Game category at The Game Awards.
