More than half of Russians (55%) have increased spending on their children’s online education in 2023. socialbites.ca learned this from an investigation of the online school of IT professions for children Rebotica and the online recruitment platform HH.ru.
More than 1,600 parents of children ages 6 to 16 participated in the study.
The majority of parents surveyed (78%) have their children enrolled in online schools in addition to basic education. For many, this is a long-term experience: 64% of respondents stated that in 2023 their children continue the education started in previous years. At the same time, nearly a third (32%) of respondents stayed at the same online school, and 42% said they transferred to another online school. Another 26% of parents reported purchasing an online course for their child for the first time in 2023.
In both cases (51% of respondents answered this way), online education of children is associated with additional study of the school curriculum. Many children learn foreign languages in this format; 40% of parents say so. Interest in IT professions and programming is also growing rapidly (25% of responses). Another trend of 2023 is the growing popularity of online chess lessons: these lessons were chosen by 8% of participants.
Online education spending for children in 2023 remained flat for 45% of survey respondents. The remainder (55%) had their expenses increase, and the majority of parents in this category (59%) saw their expenses increase by 10-20%. The other 34% started spending 40% more, and 7% of respondents said they increased their spending by 30%.
When asked why they were willing to spend more, participants mostly said that online school was more interesting to a child than regular school. They also noted the convenience of the remote format: according to parents, the child can study when he has time and mood. This affects the effectiveness of learning and children make good progress. Additionally, participants noted that children do not experience bullying in online schools.
In general, the main motivation of parents to pay for lessons in online schools for children is that the child acquires useful skills that he can use in his future studies. 57 percent of survey respondents said this.
