A young man in South Korea was sentenced to 18 months in prison for trying to avoid military service by pretending to be a pacifist. In this respect reports The Korea Herald edition.
The young man’s trial started in 2018. The Korean was accused of violating the law stipulating that all adult male South Korean citizens must serve in the military for at least 18 months. The young man tried to justify his avoidance by saying that he was a pacifist and that violence was alien to him. At the same time, “unfair orders are becoming common” in the military and military law ignores human rights.
The court found that the person who evaded military service was faking it. Throughout the entire investigation, the young man made no effort to confirm his humanist and pacifist beliefs. Such impulses had not been noticed in him before. Additionally, the defendant admitted that he often plays the online shooter game PUBG, where you have to kill people using virtual analogues of real weapons.
“A video game is different from reality, of course. “However, the defendant’s enjoyment of this game, but also his claim that he is against all forms of violence, causes the court to doubt the young man’s pacifism,” he said.
The young man was sentenced to 18 months in prison instead of military service because he evaded military service.
