The US Department of Defense applied to Elon Musk’s aviation company SpaceX with a proposal to bring the Starship spacecraft under development into the public domain. This would allow the Pentagon to use the spacecraft for “critical and potentially hazardous missions” without entering into additional contracts. This was reported by portal Quoting SpaceX senior advisor Gary Henry on Aviation Week (AW).

According to Henry, representatives of the US Department of Defense discussed with SpaceX management options for using Starship to perform very specific, risky and possibly dangerous missions for the military department.

The consultant added that SpaceX has not yet made a decision and is exploring possible response options. The company already has a contract with the US Air Force to develop a Rocket Cargo mission that would deliver cargo into space, but the Pentagon’s request goes beyond the scope of current cooperation.

The US Air Force explained that there are some cases where the equipment is used when the vehicle is government owned and must be controlled. Military officials did not specify in which scenarios this might be necessary.
