Chinese scientists have managed to develop a way to identify users of the Apple AirDrop service for tighter control of unwanted content in the country. In this respect reports Bloomberg publication referring to the Beijing administration.

An institute in Beijing has developed a method to hack the iPhone’s encrypted log to identify the phone numbers and emails of devices connected to the iPhone via AirDrop. Using the new method, police identified several people suspected of distributing banned content.

“This increases the efficiency and accuracy of solving cases and prevents the spread of inappropriate images and content that have a bad impact on citizens,” the university said.

Bloomberg writes that AirDrop is used by various activists around the world to spread their messages anonymously. This iPhone feature in particular was widely used by protesters to post pro-democracy slogans during the 2019 protests in Hong Kong.

Apple had not commented on Beijing’s statement at the time the news was published.
