American daily newspaper The New York Times (TNYT) has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft Corporation and the developer of the smart chatbot ChatGPT OpenAI for copyright infringement. According to the lawsuit, OpenAI and Microsoft trained their artificial intelligence (AI) systems based on millions of TNYT articles, reports. oppression.
The lawsuit states that Microsoft’s Copilot AI and ChatGPT OpenAI reproduced content of The New York Times verbatim in their output and “imitated its wording and content.” The plaintiff claims this “undermines and harms The New York Times’ relationship with readers” and deprives the newspaper of revenue from subscriptions, advertising, and affiliates.
The lawsuit also states that such artificial intelligence models threaten quality journalism. The newspaper asked the court to ban OpenAI and Microsoft from training AI models based on broadcast content and to remove all TNYT material from both companies’ training datasets.
A few months ago, the New York Times blocked OpenAI’s web browser, preventing the firm from extracting content from its website and using that data to train the AI.
It is the third largest newspaper in the United States in terms of circulation, after the New York Times, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal. The site’s audience is 30 million visitors per month.
