Fake updates for Chrome and Safari browsers for Apple computers have surfaced online containing the Atomic macOS Stealer (AMOC) virus, which can steal user banking data and passwords. The portal reports this 9to5Mac.
AMOS was first recognized in spring 2023. This is a thief that can steal Mac users’ passwords, credit card data, crypto wallets and other personal information.
Attackers came up with the idea of hiding malware under the guise of updating Safari and Chrome browsers. Cybersecurity experts called this attack ClearFake. The attack plan is that a Google Search advertising banner appears on sites offering to download an update for the browser. If the user accepts, the AMOS virus is installed on his computer and this virus starts stealing confidential data.
To prevent infection with the AMOS virus, experts recommend not downloading applications and updates from unverified sources for them. Users are also advised not to allow applications to bypass macOS GateKeeper protection and to use antivirus software if they so desire.
