China has introduced a new fiber optic Internet cable that provides a record data transfer rate of 1.2 terabits per second. According to the newspaper, this is equivalent to transferring 150 HD movies in one second. South China Morning Post (SCMP).
The cable, with a length of more than three thousand kilometers, connects three major cities of China: Beijing, Wuhan and Guangzhou. It was connected to the network in July 2023 and became fully operational after successfully passing all tests. Leading Chinese organizations such as Tsinghua University, China Mobile, Huawei Technologies and Cernet Corporation are behind the project.
It is stated that Chinese cables are ten times faster than their American competitors. It also exceeded the predictions of experts who expected data transfer speeds above terabits per second to become a reality before 2025 by two years.
The cable is part of the China Cernet project, which aims to create high-speed Internet connections between the country’s educational and scientific centers. A feature of the project is that all software and equipment for the cable are developed and produced in China, which increases the country’s independence from foreign companies.
