Roskomnadzor was asked to block more than 50 VPN services

Russia has proposed blocking more than 50 VPN services. Senator Artem Sheikin, deputy chairman of the council for the development of the digital economy under the Federation Council, writes that he made such a request to Roskomnadzor RIA News.

He explained that thanks to these services, resources that are prohibited in Russia can be accessed.

Sheikin noted that there are all technical possibilities that will limit the operation of some applications. According to him, Roskomnadzor has blocked almost 200 VPN services since 2021.

The politician explained that the most common blocking method now is to limit access to the VPN server by domain or IP address.

Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Information Policy Committee Alexander Khinshtein statedUsing a VPN is not prohibited in Russia, but it is everyone’s choice. He described the VPN as a device that spoofs networks and directs traffic across Russian borders. The MP explained that most VPN services collect users’ personal data and may then pass that information on to third parties.
