An unofficial version of WhatsApp for Android with malicious features is being distributed on Telegram. Kaspersky Lab experts reported this in their new report (available on socialbites.ca).

The detected version contains unknown malware with spyware functions. The Trojan can steal data from the infected device: contacts, logins and passwords, as well as documents. In addition, the program can record the sounds in the environment upon the command of the operators. The spy utility is activated when the smartphone is turned on or connected to the charger.

Kaspersky Lab reported that between October 5 and October 31, 2023, the company’s security solutions prevented more than 340 thousand attacks involving a compromised version of WhatsApp in more than a hundred countries worldwide. The largest figures were recorded in Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Russian users also encountered infection attempts.
