The company MCST, which develops Elbrus processors, is discussing the possibility of transferring production from Taiwan to Zelenograd to the factory in Mikron. This was reported by the media.
Previously, the chips were produced at TSMC’s facilities, but after sanctions were imposed, they refused to produce new Elbrus. Therefore, the option to transfer production to the Russian Federation remains. However, Mikron has the ability to produce chips only using the process technology from 180 to 90 nm, while TSMC can produce them using the process technology from 90 to 5 nm (and in the future up to 3 nm).
It is therefore no longer possible to produce even 16nm chips that are in the line. It should be noted that only eight of the nineteen Elbrus chips are produced using the process technology of 90 nm or more. The rest is more subtle. In addition, the transfer itself will require several billion rubles in the next year alone.
