Carrying two debit cards with magnetic stripes in a pocket can cause them to become demagnetized and subsequently malfunction. In this respect he is writing “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” cites the words of Olga Daineko, an expert at the Research Institute of Financial Sciences of the Ministry of Finance and the portal “MoiFinance.rf”.

According to him, new debit cards with magnetic stripes have not been issued by credit institutions since 2015. However, most of these types of payment instruments are in the hands of users and require careful handling as they are much more easily broken than chip cards.

“The magnetic stripe wears out over time or ‘dies’ when handled carelessly. This can happen if you accidentally put it in your washing machine with your clothes or carry it around with keys or metal objects every day. Deformations, such as bending the card, also affect the magnetic stripe’s ability to be read,” said Daineko.

In addition, such cards should not be carried in the same pocket or bag with electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets; they also negatively affect the functionality of magnetic tapes. Magnetic bank cards also break when exposed to strong heat, so they should not be exposed to direct sunlight in summer.

“You could only learn about demagnetization using an old-style terminal (where you had to swipe a magnetic strip across the device’s reader), but these are almost never used anymore. The presence of scratches does not yet confirm the fault,” added Daineko.
