Deal to merge Microsoft with Activision Blizzard approved by British regulators Border.
Microsoft has won approval from British regulators to merge with Activision Blizzard, the world’s largest video game publisher. The deal, worth $68.7 billion, was approved by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) after Microsoft agreed to sell cloud streaming rights for Activision games to France’s Ubisoft in a bid to reduce its market power.
Microsoft, owner of the Xbox gaming platform, announced its intention to acquire Activision Blizzard in January 2022. Activision Blizzard is known for franchises such as Call of Duty, Diablo, Overwatch and Warcraft. The deal is one of the largest in the history of the gaming industry and will increase competition from other giants such as Sony and Nintendo.
Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick congratulated his employees on the approval of the agreement and expressed his pride in all the company’s achievements.
The deal is expected to close on October 13, after which Microsoft will own all rights to more than 30 Activision Blizzard brands.
