Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO), the operator of the emergency Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant in Japan, has started discharging the second batch of water purified from radiation and toxic contaminants from the nuclear power plant into the ocean. The agency reports that Kyodo.

“The second round of discharging purified water from the plant has begun,” the nuclear power plant operator said.

According to TEPCO’s plans, the second phase of liquid evacuation will last three weeks in total and approximately 460 tons of water per day will be discharged from the underwater tunnel. A total of over 1.25 million tons of water accumulated in the reservoirs of the nuclear power plant, which was used to cool the reactor of the station, which was damaged as a result of the tsunami in March 2011.
