Musk explains the refusal to activate Starlink in Crimea with US anti-Russian sanctions

Entrepreneur Elon Musk said last year that he refused to activate the Starlink satellite communications service in Crimea at the request of Kiev due to anti-Russian sanctions. He talked about this while speaking online at the All-In Summit tech conference hosted by the hosts of The All-In Podcast. TASS.

Musk said that Starlink was disabled in Crimea during the activation request by Ukrainian authorities. Its closure was previously carried out in connection with the implementation of American sanctions against Russia. Crimea is subject to US sanctions.

Musk emphasized that the inclusion of the Starlink system in Crimea requires official Washington approval, which does not exist. He noted that the request from Kiev came literally “at midnight”. According to Musk, the offer from Ukrainian officials was a real invitation to participate in a major military operation. He compared it to Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

The entrepreneur said that Starlink would have been activated in Crimea if he had received the relevant instructions from US President Joe Biden.
