Email sign-in is still under development but already available as 2.23.18.19 by some beta testers of WhatsApp for Android.

Email will be used as an alternative way to access your WhatsApp account. It was noted that the address will not be seen by persons and addressees. At the same time, new users will still need to register on the messenger by phone number.
