Google will let Android smartphones send messages via satellite

Google Messages for Android 14 may have the ability to send emergency SOS messages via satellite in the future. In this respect informs Android Authority post citing data miners Neil Rahmouni and Mishaal Rahman.

Researchers have found new UI elements in the Google Messages code to send an SOS signal. Judging by the screenshots posted by Rahmouni, the messenger will have a separate dialog for emergency messages.

There is no information on how exactly the new feature will be implemented. Rahman writes that a smartphone must be equipped with a suitable modem to be able to send messages via satellite.

Some Android flagships are already equipped with the corresponding module. These include, for example, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. It is said that Google’s 2023 Pixel 8 and 8 Pro smartphones will also receive satellite connectivity.
