Security researchers have tested a device that can remotely collect data from iPhones, including user passwords. These release reports TechCrunch.

A handset’s capabilities were first demonstrated at Def Con, one of the biggest hacker conferences. Program participants using iPhones began receiving pop-ups asking them to link their Apple ID or share their password to a nearby Apple TV.

Researcher Jay Bohs confirmed to the publication that this is exactly how the hacking device works. The system emulates an Apple set-top box and prompts the user to send their password.

The connection is via Bluetooth, which by default is always on for most iPhone owners, according to Bohs. “The device was in my bag as I wandered around the retail outlets and the fair,” said the expert.

The hacker used a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W minicomputer, two antennas, a Linux compatible Bluetooth adapter and a portable battery to develop the device. The total cost of the device was about $ 70 (6.6 thousand rubles at the current exchange rate), and the operating range was up to 15 meters.

Previous iPhone users warned about a new scheme to infect a smartphone.
