Riding the scooter at top speed on a hot summer day and then recharging it can cause a fire due to overheating of the battery. This was told socialbites.ca by Dmitry Pelegov, senior researcher in the Central Committee of the MIPT Institute of Electric Propulsion NTI “Mobile energy storage devices”.

“The main causes of fires in electric vehicles are violations of battery integrity or failure to control the charging process. The probability of malfunction may increase if the battery is heated to a high temperature before the electric scooter is charged. For example, if you circle it at top speed in the heat and then immediately start fast charging. In theory, the electric scooter could catch fire, ”Pelegov warned, if suddenly there is no temperature control system or it fails.

As the expert noted, it is difficult for the battery of an electric scooter to break its integrity even in the event of an accident, so fires are therefore very rare.

Pelegov also recalled cases of fire in Samsung smartphones due to an error in the design of battery cells. This defect can cause an internal short circuit and subsequent ignition of the device. While this is unlikely, it could happen with the battery of an electric scooter.

“In the case of an electric scooter, this is possible if it is a new and unknown manufacturer or if it has to save money to increase its profitability. In any case, the more energy this or that device accumulates, the more you need to pay attention to its work, ”the engineer concluded.
