Teens Matty Harris, Zach Bertocci, Noah Gibson, and Scott Campbell hacked Boston’s CharlieCard subway system and found a way to get free rides in the city. It has been reported wired.
The young men presented the results of their research at the Defcon hacker conference in Las Vegas.
According to the hack’s authors, they were able to create their own portable “terminals” to replenish the balance of the travel card. The “Terminal” looks like a small desktop device with a touchscreen and an RFID sensor to fill the card.
As a result, teens were able to add any amount to CharlieCard or change their settings. The young hackers also developed an Android app that teaches them how to add trips to the map with a single tap.
The Boston Transportation Authority drew attention to the development of young people and invited them to give a presentation about the vulnerabilities found in the subway system. According to the hackers, the Boston Department of Transportation plans to implement a new transit system by 2025.
