The American company Meta (known as extremist and banned in Russia) admitted to blocking European users from connecting to the new Threads social network using a VPN. In this respect informs TechCrunch version.

At the beginning of July 2023, Meta Corporation launched Topics, a new social network that replicates the functionality of Twitter. At the same time, Meta excluded EU countries from the number of regions supported by the new services. The company did this to avoid lawsuits for Internet users for violating the requirements of strict EU privacy laws.

Europeans tried to connect to Threads using VPN services. But nothing came of it for many, as TechCrunch wrote in reference to posts from disgruntled people on social networks. In response to user outrage, Meta issued a statement in which it admitted to intentionally blocking connections to Threads servers from the EU.

“Threads are not currently available in most of Europe. We have taken additional measures to ensure that people who are currently there cannot access it. Europe remains an incredibly important market for Meta and we look forward to making Threads available in this region in the future,” said Meta.

Former information security specialists warned Russians about new scam methods using Threads.
