The jury of the international competition for experts from the Hilti Slam Challenge 2023 technical universities summarized the results, which were learned that the Russian robotics team Strelka from Innopolis University received 840.3 points, thus placing third in the overall ranking. In 2023, Hilti Slam Challenge participants solved localization and mapping tasks (SLAM, Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, – ed. not). “In practice, this is how they make an accurate map of the object and use it in navigation of mobile robots, construction, mining, inspection, digitization of enterprises, and VR presentations,” said Innopolis.
Urban Robotics Lab team representing Korea Advanced Technology Institute (KAIST) took the first place with a score of 1177.6. The HKU-MaRS-HBA team from the University of Hong Kong took the second place with a score of 934.4, with robotics from DJI alongside the students. The top three, as noted above, were closed by the Strelka team from Innopolis. A total of 60 teams from various technical universities from all over the world participated in the tournament.
“We were hoping to get into the top ten this year, but it just got better,” said Ramil Khusainov, senior researcher at the NTI Competence Center for “Robot Technologies and Mechatronics Components Technologies” based at Innopolis University.
The Hilti SLAM competition has been organized since 2021 by Hilti, the materials and construction software company, in collaboration with the University of Zurich. The competition is organized within the framework of the ICRA conference, one of the world’s most prestigious international conferences on robotics and automation, where the winners of the competition are announced.
