For the first time in 30 years since its launch, the Linux operating system hit a record 3% desktop share, but it still didn’t beat ChromeOS. Data published on the service Statistics Counter.

As can be expected, Windows takes the first place in the operating system segment for computers with a share of 68.15%. The second place behind macOS from Apple is 21.38%. At the same time, ChromeOS managed to maintain third place (4.15%). However, Google’s operating system lags far behind Microsoft and Apple’s developments.

According to June data, 3.08% of computers use Linux family operating systems. StatCounter added that about 3.24% of computers in the world are running FreeBSD or unknown operating systems.

Compared to 2018, the share of Linux doubled – at that time it was only 1.64%. At the same time, macOS increased its share from 12.33% to 21.38%. Windows is losing its old popularity. In 2018, Microsoft’s operating system was installed on 82% of all computers in the world.

Linux is the most popular operating system for servers, supercomputers, Internet of Things and embedded computers. Users prefer Windows and macOS when purchasing PCs and laptops.
