Tesla board members and lawyers have launched an internal investigation into secret Project 42, which turned out to be the new home of Tesla CEO Elon Musk. In this respect informs publication of The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing sources and company documents.
According to the WSJ, “Project 42” began appearing on Tesla’s financial statements in 2022. The company caught the attention of lawyers and board members when it ordered millions of dollars in custom glass. It soon became clear that the materials were ordered with the participation of Elon Musk and designed for the construction of his new home.
The investigation showed that Musk wanted to build himself a house in Austin, Texas, not far from Tesla headquarters. Various concepts are discussed. In one of them, the building was presented in the form of a large glass box, reminiscent of the Apple Store in Manhattan. Some of the concept art featured a waterfall on the grounds of the house. Tesla employees who were secretly working on Project 42 suggested that the building could be a museum as well as bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms.
The WSJ was unable to learn the status and outcome of the investigation. However, corporate governance experts interviewed by journalists noted that the Tesla board is extremely unlikely to approve the use of corporate funds for the construction of Elon Musk’s personal residence.
