Data such as login and password saved for connecting to Wi-Fi networks on a smartphone can be used by cybercriminals to hack the device and steal the device owner’s personal data. In this respect life.ru said Andrey Starikovsky, project manager of the Center for Digital Management Technologies of the State University of Management.

“The user’s smartphone detects a known access point and immediately connects to it. But some Wi-Fi networks are easy to hack that attackers use.”

According to the expert, it is most dangerous to save data for reconnecting from open Wi-Fi networks, since they have the weakest protection.

As a result, the scammer creates a similar Wi-Fi network with the correct settings, the user’s smartphone connects to it. After that, the attacker gains access to all traffic from the victim’s phone, allowing them to get the password of mobile banks, authorization in social networks, access to mail, photos and videos,” Starikovsky warned.

As an example, he showed the creation of similar access points. A fake Shopping Wi-Fi 3 is created along with the real and official Shopping Wi-Fi 1 and Shopping Wi-Fi 2.

“In this case, an element of social engineering has already been added, which increases the user’s trust in such a network,” said the expert.

The former Russians said about the worst place for a router in an apartment.
