Vasily Shpak, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, asked Russian electronics manufacturers to prepare a program to bring the Aurora mobile operating system to their devices for later release on the consumer market. In this respect informs “Kommersant” publication referring to the minutes of the department’s meeting with industry representatives on 13 June 2023.

According to Kommersant, Russian smartphone and tablet PC manufacturers such as Aquarius, BayErg, Azimut, Yadro, F+ Tech and more attended the meeting. The Ministry of Industry and Trade asked them all to develop a program to adapt Aurora, a mobile operating system developed by Open Mobile Platform (Rostelecom – ed.), to their devices and start selling it in the consumer segment.

“Kommersant” writes that sellers react to the future of the ministry with skepticism. At least one manufacturer told reporters that devices with the Aurora operating system will be in demand only in government agencies and companies close to them. The average user has no reason to switch from regular Android and iOS to a new operating system.

In contrast, Alexei Smirnov, chairman of the board of directors of Basalt SPO, said that tablets and smartphones based on Aurora OS will not be able to compete in the market due to their high cost. The price of the Russian device is about 50-60 thousand rubles, according to Smirnov, it is much more expensive than its Chinese counterpart, which at a lower price is much more functional and powerful. Also, the expert added that smartphones and tablets with Aurora OS cannot be legally sold in the Russian Federation, as they do not support a number of applications that must be pre-installed.
