Engineers from PATS, a company based at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, have created mini-drones to control pests in greenhouses. It has been reported New Atlas.

According to scientists, the pests are detected inside the greenhouse by an infrared camera system connected to the internet. The image from the cameras is processed with an algorithm based on artificial intelligence.

Based on data on the size of the insect and the frequency of its wing beating, it is calculated what kind of pest it is. The system does not attack beneficial insects such as bees.

When the pest is detected, the signal is transmitted to the drones mounted on a wireless charging pedestal. One of them is sent to the location of the pest. As a result, the drone collides with an insect and then returns to base.

According to New Atlas, only the basic version of the camera system is currently in use at 250 sites across Europe. The system, which has an unmanned aerial vehicle on the pedestal, is still being tested. The scientists plan to start rolling out the innovation by the end of 2023.
