Apple and Nokia extend partnership

Apple and Nokia have signed a long-term licensing agreement that will give the American IT company access to the European partner’s patents in the field of 5G and beyond. In this respect informs MacRumors version.

It is noted that the new agreement will actually automatically renew the previous contract between Apple and Nokia, which expired at the end of 2023. Details of the deal were not disclosed, but it is certain that Nokia will receive regular payments from Apple. The exact amount will then be reflected in Nokia’s financial report for the first quarter of 2024.

Under the agreement, Apple acquires the right to use more than 20,000 Nokia patents. About 5.5 thousand of them belong to cellular communication technologies such as 5G. In a press release, Nokia stated that building all this know-how cost the company an investment of 140 billion euros, which has been ongoing since 2000.

The first contract between Nokia and Apple was signed in 2017. The settlement preceded numerous legal disputes and lawsuits.

Apple needs, among other things, Nokia technologies to develop its own 5G modem. The latter is being created by Apple in order, among other things, to release a relatively inexpensive version of the fourth-generation iPhone SE, as MacRumors journalists wrote the previous day.
