The secret of streaks and other loading indicators in games was revealed after one of comedian Alasdair Bucket-King’s posts on Twitter. He jokingly suggested that developers start making games by creating smooth loading indicators that will fill evenly and show the time until the procedure is complete.
“Once that’s done, they can move on to graphics, jumping and everything else,” Bucket-King wrote.
The comedian’s joke did not go unnoticed by the real developers, and they began to tell in the comments how things really work with download bars in games. It turns out that there is no practice in the industry to create reasonable upload indicators that reflect the actual progress of file processing.
“I’ve never worked on a game without a fake loading bar. “The actual loading strips are alarming,” wrote Rubio Munariz, founder of Tequila Works.
Munariz also added that he always insists on adding strips to plays that are filled out fluently rather than believably. Otherwise, he says he just uses the spinning wheel.
“Funny detail: players don’t believe in filling the loading bar evenly. Sudden movements and pauses are more believable to them. I’ve worked on games that deliberately simulate uneven loading,” added Mike Bittell, developer of Subsurface Circular.
In response, Vladimir Bogdanchik, an employee of Croatian studio Under the Stairs, said he needed to add an imaginary loading screen to Eyes in the Dark to be able to switch from the start menu smoothly. Although there was no real need for it – the download was instant.
