Google announced that the ambitious Project Iris augmented reality glasses project, which it has been working on for several years, has been closed. In this respect informs business inside.

Project Iris was one of Google’s virtual and augmented reality initiatives led by Clay Bayvor. He left the company at the end of 2022, and in early 2023, Google laid off some of its employees who were involved in the development of points. According to sources, this was a sign that the project was in danger of closing.

The first information about Project Iris appeared in January 2022. It was later learned that Google, together with Samsung, created augmented reality glasses with a design similar to ski goggles. But later it turned out that this is just a prototype and the real glasses have a more traditional design.

Now, Google has abandoned the idea of ​​making its own augmented reality hardware and focused on developing a software platform for this technology. The company hopes this approach will allow it to compete with other players in the market, such as Apple, Meta (recognized and banned in Russia as extremist), and Microsoft.
