ArsTechnica editor Ron Amadeo broke the Google Pixel Fold on day four of testing. HE recommendsThat the damage to the OLED panel was caused by a small dust particle that got into the gap between the half of the screen.
“The phone was on my desk while I was writing about it, and I stopped occasionally to point my finger at the screen, take a screenshot, or turn it on and off. It has never been dropped or exposed to sand… It was the easiest to use phone and yet it broke,” Amadeo writes.
According to the journalist, the screen of a smartphone worth 1.8 thousand dollars (about 152 thousand rubles) “died” in four days. First a white line appeared at the bottom of the screen and the left half of the screen stopped responding to touch. An hour later, a white stripe began to spread across the screen.
He also pointed out that flexible OLED displays are implemented with a thin layer of glass, over which another layer of plastic film does not cover the entire front panel. In addition, the smartphone has no protruding edges above the screen, as a result of which the two halves of the screen fit snugly together when folded. Amadeo’s conclusion was that during folding, a dust particle was pressed on a place not covered by a plastic film by the screen, resulting in perforation of the matrix.
“So, even if you wipe the screen thoroughly, that environment will collect any mess that gets on the phone… It looks like that’s what killed the phone, as I can see an almost microscopic scratch next to where the screen problems first started,” the journalist said.
