Beta versions of WhatsApp for iOS and Android have a new feature that lets you choose the resolution of an image before sending it. In this respect informs WABetaInfo portal.

Currently, when sending an image, WhatsApp heavily compresses the photo to save traffic and space on the recipient’s device, resulting in the quality of the image degrading drastically. The new feature allows you to choose the resolution of the file before sending it. In particular, two options are available: Standard quality (1600 x 1052 pixels) and HD Quality (4096 x 2692 pixels). After sending a high resolution picture, it will be marked with the HD icon in the chat.

WABetaInfo explains that HD Quality does not mean sending the image in its original size. Even when this mode is selected, the messenger continues to compress the image, depriving it of some detail.

Currently, the new feature is rolling out to users of WhatsApp beta versions 2.23.12.13 and 23.11.0.76 for Android and iOS respectively. It was not reported when the possibility of sending images in high resolution appeared in the public version of Messenger.
