Microsoft hits big fine for collecting children’s personal data

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced that it will fine Microsoft $20 million for illegally collecting and processing data from minors. In this respect informs Edition of The Verge.

The FTC claims are aimed at the gaming division of IT giant Xbox. The investigation revealed that when creating an Xbox game account, children can enter their personal data before a notification requiring parental consent appears. Data entered in this way was automatically sent to Microsoft servers and stored there for years, even if the account creation procedure was not completed. The issue was fixed at the end of 2021.

“Unfortunately, we were unable to meet our customers’ expectations and we are determined to fulfill them. [FTC]so we can continue to improve our security measures. We believe we can and should do more to ensure the privacy and security of our community.” Microsoft commented on the FTC decision.

According to Microsoft, the discovered problem appeared in the Xbox interface as a result of a technical error. The company assures that data obtained as a result of the failure of minors is never used, transferred or monetized.
