Pre-orders for Final Fantasy XVI opened in December 2022. Khan claims that after six months of resale, the new items are much less than the result of the previous episode, Final Fantasy XV. Square Enix is worried that Final Fantasy XVI may be available for purchase on fewer platforms than the then-available Final Fantasy XV.
“Of course, these are just pre-orders. They’re mainly useful for estimating guaranteed first-day sales. The overall sales of the game can still surprise anyone,” Khan wrote.
According to an insider, Square Enix believes that the weak pre-order of Final Fantasy XVI was most likely influenced by a weak marketing campaign. A shortcoming with Final Fantasy XVI could force developers to rethink how they’re going to advertise their next project, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, due to be released this winter.

Final Fantasy XVI will be released exclusively for PlayStation 5 on June 22, 2023.
