Financial Times reporter Christina Criddle was targeted by the Chinese company ByteDance, which owns the social network TikTok. The girl’s movements were tracked using her cat Buffy account, the portal reported. Gizmodo.
Criddle came under scrutiny by ByteDance after it published articles about how TikTok collects US user data and the company’s ties to the Chinese government. After that, four employees of the Chinese company began following the journalist while using his cat’s TikTok account – they checked the authorization logs to correct Criddle’s IP addresses. Thus, they aimed to establish that the journalist was involved in data leaks from the company.
The girl was informed that she was followed by one of the TikTok employees. The journalist, who found the news “deeply traumatic”, announced that he would no longer post content on his cat’s account. ByteDance said it fired employees involved in the surveillance, but could not explain how they knew Buffy’s account belonged to Christina Criddle.
