The British government risks entering a phase of open conflict with the WhatsApp messenger, as a result of which the service may withdraw from the country altogether. newspaper reports Guardian.
The problem lies in the new law that will oblige all messengers in the UK to implement a moderation policy that cannot be enforced if the service has end-to-end encryption protecting user correspondence. WhatsApp’s head, Will Cathcart, had previously made it clear that his ambassador would not be subject to the new rules and would prefer to leave the British market.
British lawmakers urged the government to take the announcement seriously. “These services, including WhatsApp, will leave the country. This is not just a threat to anyone. As we put serious pressure on these platforms and force them to scan user communications, we must not forget that they are world services. “Their systems work for billions of people around the world and they will not compromise for the sake of the relatively small British market,” said Claire Fox, member of the House of Lords.
