European Commission spokesman Thierry Breton warned Apple that iPhone sales would be banned if the company restricts the functionality of uncertified USB-C cables. In this respect informs MacRumors version.

Apple is said to introduce the iPhone 15 in 2023, which will differ from previous generation smartphones in that, among other things, it has a USB-C connector instead of Lightning. Apple is likely to make this change to ensure that the company’s devices are fully compliant with the new EU legislation that will come into effect in October 2024.

Apple is said to be releasing certified cables with USB-C connectors to save profits from selling accessories. Uncertified cables may be limited in data transfer rate and power of transmitted electricity, which will mainly affect the charging speed of smartphones.

European Commission representative Thierry Breton decided to act proactively. He sent a letter to Apple in which he warned the company that the sale of new iPhones would be banned if it restricts the functionality of uncertified devices. True, this ban will come into effect only after the introduction of new legislation, that is, at the end of 2024.
