If a cybersecurity threat is new or comes from an unknown source, Microsoft will assign it a temporary name “Storm” and a four-digit number. In the past, the Redmond-based company used the word “DEV” for such situations.
Hackers from certain states will take the name of weather events. For example, Chinese hackers will be called typhoon, and Russian hackers will be called blizzard.
For this, the company also created special badges. For Russia, a snowflake image will be used. Iranian hackers were tagged as sandstorm, Lebanese hackers as rain, and North Korean hackers as sleet.
It is stated that Microsoft is currently monitoring 160 national hacker groups, 50 ransomware groups, and more than 300 unique hackers who are not members of certain groups.
