In the first quarter of 2023, a DDoS attack with a capacity of 1.4 Tbps was recorded in Russia, 17% more than the highest capacity recorded previously. socialbites.ca learned about this from a report by StormWall, a company specializing in information security, with a copy at the editors’ disposal.
Experts believe that the emergence of “giant bot networks” (networks of infected devices with Internet access, whose resources are involved in DDoS attacks by hackers – editor’s note) has influenced the growth in the strength of attacks. Before the end of the year, StormWall expects to see attacks of up to 3 Tbps.
As part of the study, StormWall experts also found that, as early as 2023, attackers began to resort to sophisticated DDoS attacks more frequently targeting various online resources of companies simultaneously. So, for example, an attack could simultaneously involve the target organization’s site, network, and other infrastructure to cause the most damage.
“The complex attacks were incredibly devastating and wreaked havoc on the business. According to experts, the attacks were organized by politically motivated aggressors and hackers who, after the recession in late 2022, began aggressively attacking Russian companies in early 2023.”
It’s also evident from StormWall’s report that in the first quarter, hackers attacked companies from the financial sector the most – 32% of all recorded DDoS attacks were hackers. In second place, e-commerce (26%) and telecom (10%) close the top three. Also at the top were companies from the insurance, oil and gas industry, manufacturing and education.
