Japanese game giant Sega has announced its decision to acquire Rovio, the studio responsible for the popular Angry Birds series. Portal reports CNBC.
The cost of the deal will be $776 million. According to a Sega representative, Rovio’s board of directors has expressed support for this decision.
Sega was founded in Tokyo in 1960. He is best known for the Sonic the Hedgehog and Total War series, as well as the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive video game consoles that were popular worldwide in the 90s. The Japanese giant plans to expand Rovio’s presence in the mobile gaming market. Angry Birds is “loved around the world”, according to Sega Sammy Holdings CEO Haruki Satomi.
“I am confident that significant synergies will be achieved in the future thanks to the combination of brands, characters, fan bases of both companies, as well as corporate culture and functionality,” said Rovio president, Alexander Pelletier-Norman. The hedgehog and the protagonist of Angry Birds Red are “world famous and iconic characters”.
