Western countries are wary of sharing technology with China, but Chinese companies are already spending enormous sums on high-tech research and development, a sign that they probably no longer need Western technology. This was expressed by the agency’s columnist. BloombergJustin Fox, former editor-in-chief of Harvard Business Review.
“The last time I compiled one of these lists five years ago, Huawei was sixth after Microsoft, but was the only Chinese company in the global top 25. Now they’re joined by TikTok owner ByteDance, WeChat owner and gaming giant Tencent, and marketplace Alibaba.”
Fox said the biggest change since 2004 is how much more top companies spend. “In 2004, number one Microsoft at the time spent almost half as much as Merck, which was ranked 20 this year,” the expert explained.
Also, with the exception of Apple, the spending of all the top companies in the ranking is primarily on algorithms, artificial intelligence systems, etc. This rule also applies to Chinese companies ByteDance, Tencent and Alibaba.
