Microsoft in the US “fined” for collaborating with Russia and other countries

Microsoft paid the US Treasury Department $3 million to settle the dispute over the IT company’s violation of sanctions and export control restrictions. In this respect informs Reuters cited a statement from the US Treasury Department.

It was noted that Microsoft paid the fine after voluntarily reporting more than 1,300 blatant violations of US sanctions on Russia, Cuba, Iran and Syria. Most breaches occurred between 2012 and 2019, according to Reuters. It concerns the interaction of Microsoft with various enterprises in the territory of Crimea.

The U.S. Treasury Department said the dispute was fully resolved because Microsoft’s breaches were “not gruesome and were not voluntarily disclosed.”

Microsoft told reporters that it takes export control very seriously and enforces compliance.

“After learning of several employees’ failed checks and violations, we voluntarily reported them to the relevant authorities,” the company said.

The violations are alleged to have been committed due to the lack of comprehensive information about clients in the countries listed above.
