New OpcJacker virus disguised as a VPN and stealing data from browsers

The new OpcJacker malware is distributed over the network under the guise of a VPN service that, when installed, intercepts and sends data from the victim’s browser and other programs to attackers. More on that in my new report. knowledgeable information security company Trend Micro.

The information thief OpcJacker was first spotted in the second half of 2022. The main function of the malware is to steal data. To do this, it can take screenshots, capture data from browsers, gather information about keystrokes, and more.

One of the most recent OpcJacker distribution campaigns was recorded in February 2023 and was aimed at the Iranian public. The virus spread under the guise of a client of an anonymous VPN service. Often a link is posted on cryptocurrency-related sites.

Despite its rich functionality, OpcJacker is regularly used by attackers not for its intended purpose, but as a dropper that sends additional malware to the victim’s computer, according to Trend Micro. Such plug-ins are usually tools that provide covert remote access to someone else’s computer, such as hVNC, and ransomware viruses such as Phobos.
