Calls to suspend the development of artificial intelligence “will not solve the problems that await humanity in the future.” Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates in a conversation with Reuters commented a recent petition by IT professionals, signed by Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, among others, demanding a ban on training complex AIs such as GPT-3 and GPT-4.
In their petition, IT experts pointed out that artificial intelligence is still not fully understood and its continued development could cause humanity to “lose control over civilization”. Gates believes this requirement is utopian, as it is unlikely that all scientists around the world would immediately cease their work for various reasons.
“I really do not understand to whom exactly the appeal of the authors of this letter is directed? Also, it’s hard for me to imagine how every country in the world could stop their research, and most importantly why they should do it.”
But Gates agreed with the petition’s thesis that scientists should examine the areas of risk that arise when using artificial intelligence.
