Twitter lost the verification checkbox after The New York Times refused to pay and inflicted the wrath of platform owner Elon Musk. It has been reported Bloomberg.
The NYT was one of the first media outlets to openly oppose Twitter Blue’s new subscription offer, which offered to pay $8 a month for the privilege of having a verification checkmark, which was previously free. The newspaper’s main Twitter account has around 55 million followers.
Twitter head Elon Musk called the NYT’s decision “hypocritical”, noting that the newspaper has its own subscription service that it does not hesitate to advertise everywhere. When one of the users of the platform published a meme that the newspaper did not want to pay for the blue tick, Musk wrote: “Okay, then we’ll get it.” It was previously reported that Twitter will remove blue verification checkmarks from users who do not want to participate in the paid Twitter Blue program from April 1, 2023.
